Back Door Donuts from Martha’s Vineyard is Popping Up in Boston

Back Door Donuts, the beloved purveyor of late night treats on Martha’s Vineyard, is bringing the sweetness to Boston this spring.

 

I’m not a Martha’s Vineyard guy. I grew up middle class on the North Shore. Summer vacations for me were–and continue to be–to the beaches of Maine and the mountains of New Hampshire. Martha’s Vineyard might as well be in Europe as far as I’m concerned. Although the lineup for Beach Road Weekend this year looks killer. All of that to say, I’ve not experienced first hand the sweet delight of a Back Door donut. So I had to to a bit of research.

 

I surfed over to the Back Door Donuts website to see what all the fuss is about. A few clicks in, and I’m staring down the barrel of the ooiest, gooiest apple fritter I’ve seen since…well, since I last gobbled up an apple fritter. Which would be last summer at Congdon’s Donuts in Wells Beach, ME. You see, I’m a sucker for an apple fritter. And if you don’t have one, I’ll happily settle for a blueberry fritter. Or even a maple bacon fritter, if you can scare one of those up.

Back Door Donuts is bringing their fritters and a bunch of other baked goodies to Boston this month, just in time for Opening Day at Fenway Park. Starting on March 15, they’ll be slinging sweets out the back door of Loretta’s Last Call. So in keeping with the “Donuts After Dark” tradition that both Vineyard visitors and natives have been enjoying for years, we’ll be able to enjoy donuts after dark in Boston. Which means donuts after Sox games. Or shows at the House of Blues. Or the MGM Music Hall.

 

Mmmmm…donuts.

Here's How We Like to Chow Our Chicken Wings in New England

We love chicken wings in New England just as much as the rest of the U.S. does. But in some ways, we’re a bit different in how we eat them.

 

Back in February, I shared this ranking of the Top 10 Super Bowl Snack in Massachusetts. Chicken wings placed forth on the list, which is no surprise. You’d be hard pressed to find a Super Bowl party where wings aren’t on the menu in some way, shape, or form. Incidentally, if I’m rolling up to your Super Bowl party, your wings had better be of the Buffalo variety, as that’s my favorite. More on that in a bit.

 

The Big Game has come and gone, of course. But it just so happens to be Mass Beer Week this week. Yesterday, I shared a week’s worth of Massachusetts breweries and taprooms that I love and suggest that you check out this week. You can check that list out here. Today, I’m thinking about how well some of those local brews would pair with a spicy hot order of chicken wings. Preferably from Buff’s Pub in Newton. They have the bets damn wings in the Boston area and they always have a handful of local beers on tap.

 

Here’s How We Like to Chow Our Chicken Wings in New England

Let’s shift our focus away from Boston and take a look at Massachusetts as a whole. And then let’s shift our focus even further afield and take a look at all of New England. Cree Lighting recently shared a study called How Every State Orders Its Chicken Wings. I went through their study and “plucked” the stats for the six New England states. Dip your drumsticks into how each state prefers to consume its beloved wings below, then see how it stacks up to your own carrots and celery.

  • Connecticut

    Boneless, Buffalo sauce, blue cheese – Swap those boneless wings out for bone-in flats and you have my personal favorite wing order.

  • Maine

    Boneless, honey BBQ, ranch – Swap out that lobster roll at Barnacle Billy’s with an order of wings, but keep the Bissell Brothers!

  • Massachusetts

    Flat wing, honey BBQ, ranch – George Balekji from NESN knows the score.

  • New Hampshire

    Boneless, honey BBQ, ranch – The honey BBQ sauce on the wings pairs well with poutine, so I’m told.

  • Rhode Island

    Boneless, Buffalo sauce, blue cheese – I love Al Forno in Providence for their grilled pizza, but I’d absolutely mess up an order of wings if they were on the menu.

  • Vermont

    Drumstick, Buffalo sauce, blue cheese – Vermont for some reason was left off the list, so I’m lumping them in with NY. And whatever wings I order, I’m washing ’em down with a brew from The Alchemist.
