You know I love a good cover song. And you know I love Smashing Pumpkins. So I’m all in on this Smashing Pumpkins “1979” cover.
The cover comes courtesy of Two Minutes To Late Night, the going concern of Creator/Host/Producer/Musician/Video Editor/Raconteur Jordan Olds. I’ve shared clips from his YouTube channel before. He’s part of the reason so many of us that love punk and hardcore and metal of every variety were able to make through the pandemic without losing our minds. For the most part. OK, maybe that last part is a stretch. My mind is still gone and likely gone for good.
It’s nice the Olds has kept the content coming even as we’ve all returned to “normal” life. Which is absolutely a thing. You know, because life was so “normal” before the pandemic. Listen, pre-pandemic, height-of-the-pandemic, post-pandemic…no matter the time frame, I’m all about cover songs. So the Smashing Pumpkins cover Olds & Co. just dropped grabbed my eye right away. By the way, that’s not to be confused with the Smashing Pumpkins doing covers. You can get a dozen of those here.

Sorry. I’m rambling. Another thing to blame on the pandemic. Let’s get to the cover. But first, the personnel:
This cover features Jeremy Bolm: Touché Amoré, Hesitation Wounds; Wade MacNeil: Alexisonfire, Gallows Hunter; Burgan: AFI; Daniel Tracy: Deafheaven; Jordan Olds aka Gwarsenio Hall
And it is as advertised: a Smashing Pumpkins “1979” HARDCORE COVER. Because, as I’ve said in this space before, what’s the point of covering a song if you’re not going to make it 100% your own? Two Minutes To Late Night has been doing just that for a few years now, and their latest is no exception. Find their Patreon here and show them your support. And shake down, Twenty Twenty-three!
