20 Years Ago, the Smashing Pumpkins Rocked the Tsongas Arena
April 29, 2000. The Smashing Pumpkins Machina Tour rolls into the Tsongas Arena in Lowell. I was there to witness the spectacle.
Bear in mind, this would be the last time the Pumpkins played the Boston area before their first breakup in 2000. This was also the lineup that featured Melissa Auf Der Maur on bass and the return of Jimmy Chamberlain on drums. I’d seen the band 4 years earlier in Providence with D’Arcy Wretzky on bass. Comparing the two lineups, the 2000 group gets the edge: Jimmy was clean and his drumming was tight, and Melissa was all rock poses and high energy.
I wasn’t able to find any live footage of the show, but I did dig up the setlist. Check it out below, along with a TV performance the band turned in just a few weeks earlier in Montreal.
