A Shawn Michaels interview in anticipation of WWE NXT Battleground, coming to the Tsongas Center on May 28.
It’s not everyday I get the opportunity to interview one of the greatest professional wrestlers of all time. My number came up last week when I got word that Shawn Michaels was available to chat on the phone in anticipation of the big WWE NXT Battleground event coming to Lowell at the end of the month. Naturally, I jumped at the chance. WWF Champion, Hall-of-Famer, 15-time Match of the Year Award winner, the man responsible for some of the greatest Wrestlemania moments of all time. A true legend.
My earliest memory of Shawn Michaels is his WWF debut in the late ’80s as one half of the tag team The Rockers (the other half, of course, was Marty Jannetty). I was middle school-aged and a huge WWF fan. I remember talking my folks into buying a Wrestlemania or two on Pay Per View back in the day. I remember, too, when Michaels started to employ the “Heartbreak Kid” nickname and gimmick. His rivalry with Razor Ramon was must-see TV back at the tail end of the Golden Era of the WWF.
Shawn Michaels Interview: Wrestling, Lowell, and the Kowloon
Currently, Michaels is the head honcho for WWE’s NXT brand. So we chatted about that, about his memories of visiting the Boston area to wrestle early on in his career, and how it’s his responsibility to–when he brings WWE NXT Battleground to the Tsongas Center on May 28–make sure the young wrestlers who’ve never been to the area before make a pilgrimage to the Kowloon on Rt. 1 in Saugus, as so many pro wrestlers have done before.
