Bandcamp Steps Up Again for Artists Struggling During COVID-19
Back in March, online music company Bandcamp waived its sales cut to give more money to artists on their site. They’re doing it again.
This Friday, May 1, 100% of sales on Bandcamp will go directly to artists. Bandcamp will put this “First Friday” model into play in June and July, too: they’ll wave their cut on June 5 and July 3. CEO Ethan Diamond says:
“With such a major revenue stream drying up almost entirely, finding ways to continue supporting artists in the coming months is an urgent priority for anyone who cares about music and the artists who create it. It may sound simple, but the best way to help artists is with your direct financial support, and we hope you’ll join us through the coming months as we work to support artists in this challenging time.”
I’ve been a long-time proponent of Bandcamp: they’re the digital platform that does the most for artists. So this is totally in line with what they do, and I’m happy to help get the word out.
