Here’s What’s Happened to Remote Work in Massachusetts Since 2021
The pandemic hit and we were forced to adjust – in many ways. One change we saw as a result of COVID was the rise of Work From Home. Many of us have done so many Zooms that we want to Zoom no more! But the now 2024 question is… what has happened to remote work in Massachusetts since 2021?
Many of us looked at remote work as the wave of the future. Why waste hours in traffic when we don’t need to? It looked like Work From Home was here to stay… and here to stay in a big way. But… then businesses, some small and a lot big, decided that they wanted workers to come back to work. So where does remote work stand in Massachusetts in 2024?
It has rolled back. A lot.
A new study by business resource website LLC.org reveals that Massachusetts employers have been pushing workers to come back to the office since the peak of the pandemic. According to the report the number of remote workers in Massachusetts has decreased by more than 165,000 since 2021 — that’s nearly a 20% drop. Remote workers in Boston have decreased by around 28%! Massachusetts saw the fourth-biggest decrease of all 50 US states since 2021 according to the study.
New York and New Jersey saw the biggest remote work declines in the US since 2021. New York has seen a 23% drop while New Jersey has decreased by 21%.
Rhode Island has seen an even sharper drop in work from home than Massachusetts. Rhode Island has seen the 3rd biggest drop in the US.
Glendale, Arizona and Buffalo, New York have seen the biggest increases in remote work since 2021.
