Who makes the best Italian sub in Massachusetts? Before we dive into who makes the best Italian subs in Massachusetts, let’s take a look at what exactly goes into making the perfect Italian sub.

While the specific ingredients can be debated, the average sub contains a sub roll, Genoa salami, provolone cheese, mortadella, capicola, lettuce, olive oil, salt and pepper, prosciutto and pepperoni. Italian subs can vary based on condiments and type of bread not to mention the types of cheeses. But there is one thing that remains consistent. The Italian sub is one of the most popular subs in the entire country.

Now, let’s take a look at where in Massachusetts you can get the best Italian sub. We asked our audience and one answer reigned supreme and it was an overwhelming response: New Deal Fruit in Revere. Out of our initial responses, over half of them were for New Deal Fruit. When going to the New Deal website, we found that the deli is owned by the Petruzzelli family and has appeared on The Phantom Gourmet. After looking at the menu, New Deal Fruit features specialty sandwiches, hot subs and cold subs. Hot subs like meatball, chicken parm, veal parm AND a combination sub of chicken AND veal parm. When asked what makes the Italian sub at New Deal better than the rest, the most popular answer was “the best imported meats sliced thin and the bread is extremely fresh.” According to the New Deal website, “Today the fourth generation of the Petruzzelli family carries forth the Joseph’s legacy selling high quality fruits and vegetables as well as hand-sliced deli meats and oversized submarine sandwiches.”
