Metallica Marching Band Competition Returns For Epic Year 2
The Metallica Marching Band Competition is back for 2024. And it’s a bit bigger–and brassier–than the 2023 inaugural edition.
Last year, the Competition saw over 500 colleges and high schools across the United States enter. They put together Metallica-themed programs for their chance at a share of over $200,000 in prizes. In the end, Auburn University was the big winner.
The Auburn University Marching Band enlisted the help of the Auburn University College of Engineering to bring “Wherever I May Roam” to life on the gridiron. The light-filled spectacular made them the overall winner as well as the Fan Favorite.
Metallica Marching Band Competition: 2024 Update
The second annual edition of the Competition, presented by Metallica and their partner Sweetwater, is upping the ante. Now competing bands will have three times as many chances to win. That’s in addition to the Fan Favorite award, which is also returning.
Each of the five categories—College (Division 1), College (Divisions 2 & 3), High School (Large), High School (Medium) and High School (Small)—will now include awards for first, second and third place. Metallica once again will choose the winners.
Metallica Marching Band Competition: Get Into It
Sign-ups are now open at the aptly-named MetallicaMarchingBand.com. Interested bands have until September 23 to register. By that time, the 2024 football and marching band seasons will have started, so it’s onto the field to perform.
Submissions are due at the end of November, so competing schools will have plenty of opportunities to get a good performance on video. Winners will be announced in early 2025, so we’ll keep an eye on that for you. Especially if a New England school places highly.
In the meantime, watch Metallica literally ride the lightning at a 2024 tour stop in Munich, Germany. It’s electric!
