Strange Maynard is a Bold 1-Day Film Festival for the Daring
Strange Maynard isn’t your typical film festival. It’s packing five hours of underground short films into just one day.
That one day is Saturday, May 4. And if you’re thinking: “Strange Maynard? That must mean it’s taking place in Maynard, MA” then you’re thinking correctly. The festival runs from 12 p.m. until 5 p.m. at the Fine Arts Theater, 19 Summer St. in Maynard. Maynard has a lot going on this spring, actually. There’s a Metallica tribute and charity fundraiser there in April.
But back to the film festival. Or, rather, short film festival. All films screened will be under 20 minutes in length. Program Director Erica Stockwell-Alpert shares that they’re “looking to shine a spotlight on strange and bizarre short films. This festival will place an emphasis on films that are funny, weird, creepy, or all of the above.” Think different flavors of horror and comedy: the surreal, the stranger.

If you’re a budding filmmaker yourself, and you’re reading this before March 30, guess what? You can submit your film here! Underground filmmakers, low budget filmmakers, and first-timers are all encouraged. To get an even better idea of the types of films screened at the festival, you can take a look at the lineup from last year’s inaugural festival here.
And if you’re looking for tickets, you can get those here. And they’re just ten bucks! Five hours of independent short films for ten bucks feels like the steal of the century. Oh, and one more thing. One more very important thing: THIS IS NOT FOR KIDS! I’m putting that in all caps, just like the festival’s website. The films screened are unrated and feature lots of disturbing, family-unfriendly content. Which makes it all the more tantalizing. See you in at Strange Maynard in May!
