Welcome to another edition of Today in Boston ROCK, where I, Adam 12, spotlight Very Important Days In Rock History. September 16th is one.

  • 1948

September 16, 1948: Ron Blair, Tom Petty‘s go-to bassman, is born. Let me tell you, after yesterday’s Cursed Day in Rock, it’s nice to have a birthday to mark instead of three death anniversaries!

  • 1964

September 16, 1964: Dave “The Snake” Sabo is born. Best known for his axe time with Skid Row, Sabo was Bon Jovi‘s original lead guitarist and also logged time with Anthrax. Quite the rock resume for The Snake.

  • 1977

September 16, 1977: Talking Heads release their debut album, Talking Heads: 77. Let’s take a moment to appreciate “Psycho Killer,” from the album’s B side. Shouts to Tina Weymouth for writing one of the all-time greatest bass riffs in rock history.

  • 1999

September 16, 1999: Cheap Trick headlines Avalon on Lansdowne St. in Boston. The opener? Dayton, Ohio’s own Guided By Voices. Cheap Trick was my favorite rock band when I was a kid in the ’80s. GBV was my favorite rock band when I was in college in the ’90s. I was at the show and it was a dream come true. Read all about it here.
