We have some amazing schools in Massachusetts – that we all know. Harvard University, Tufts University, UMASS, Boston College, Boston University, we could go on and on and on. Routinely when lists of top schools in America come out, Massachusetts is sure to eat up a handful of the top spots. But a new list of the best universities globally just came out… and congrats are in order for MIT.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology finished at #3 in the world! We had another at #4 in the world too, but we’ll get to that in a sec.
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), one of the world’s premier institutions for science, technology, and engineering, has a storied history dating back to its founding in 1861. MIT was initially established to address the industrial and scientific needs of the United States during the Civil War. Throughout its history, MIT has played a pivotal role in technological advancements, including contributions to radar, nuclear science, and the development of the World Wide Web. It has fostered innovation and entrepreneurship, becoming a hub for cutting-edge research and a breeding ground for some of the world’s most influential inventors and innovators. Today, MIT continues to lead the way in scientific and technological breakthroughs.

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings for 2024 looks at 1,904 universities across 108 countries and regions to determine the best on planet Earth. They crunch 18 calibrated performance indicators that measure an institution’s performance across five separate areas: teaching, research environment, research quality, industry, and international outlook.

When all was said and done, Oxford University in England was tops of the tops – the #1 university in the world. Stanford University in California came in second while Massachusetts Institute of Technology took third.

New England also had 4 more schools that mad the Top 100 universities in the world list. We’ll run those by you below. Any guesses who the 4 are??

  • Massachusetts Institute of Technology

    MIT finished as the #3 university in the world. MIT is currently organised into five different schools: architecture and planning, engineering, humanities, arts and social sciences, management and science.

  • Harvard University

    Harvard University in Cambridge finished as the #4 university on Earth. Dating back to 1636, Harvard University is the oldest university in the US and is regarded as one of the most prestigious in the world.

  • Yale University

    Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut was ranked #10 globally. Yale was established in 1701, when it was founded as the Collegiate School in Saybrook, Connecticut and moved to New Haven 15 years later.

  • Brown University

    Brown, in Providence, Rhode Island, was named the #64 university in the world. Brown tied Wageningen University & Research in the Netherlands and The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology at #64.

  • Boston University

    Boston University made the Top 100 Universities in the World, coming in at #78. With around 35,000 undergraduate and graduate students from more than 130 countries, BU is one of the largest universities in the greater Boston area, where we have more than 100 higher education institutions.
