Netflix to Launch Red Sox Documentary Series on April 8
On Apr. 8, Netflix will premiere its latest sports doc, The Clubhouse: A Year with the Red Sox, the same day the MLB season begins. The eight-episode docuseries, which was directed by Greg Whiteley and filmed over the course of the Boston Red Sox’s 2024 season, provides an intimate glimpse into the life experienced by Major League Baseball players, even beyond that of the sport’s biggest stars.
The full trailer, released on Mar. 12, highlights the physical and mental demands of playing in Boston, a city known for its passionate fan base. The series explores the team’s challenges, as the Red Sox finished with an 81-81 record, marking their third straight season missing the playoffs.
While they finished in last place three times in the past four years, the documentary notes their recent troubles against the franchise’s deep well of success, including four World Series championships since 2004. The series spends time with key figures, including manager Alex Cora and players Jarren Duran and Triston Casas, exploring their struggles and motivations.
Whiteley, known for his sports documentaries, sheds light on the internal battles players face in a sport, both mental and physical. “Baseball is an individual sport masquerading as a team sport,” Whiteley said. “Each game is filled with cinematic one-on-one battles: pitcher versus hitter; catcher versus base stealer; or manager versus manager. However, the fiercest fights we saw were in a player’s mind. The docuseries provides an uncommon behind-the-scenes glimpse into how players manage their professional obligations and personal woes amid the loneliness and stress of the sport.
Through candid interviews and raw footage, The Clubhouse hopes to give fans a deeper appreciation of what competing at the highest level is about. A Year with the Red Sox is an inside look at what goes into winning at baseball, giving this season Viacom increasing focus on America’s pastime while appealing to more than just the baseball world.
