Police Alert: Fake $500 Gift Card Scam Hits Newton Shopping Plaza
People left fake $500 gift cards on cars at Newton’s busy shopping center, targeting vehicles near TJ Maxx and Sierra Trading Post along Needham Street.
“We believe scammers are trying to get personal information and possibly credit card information once the link is clicked,” said the Newton Police Department to WCVB.
The cards come in small envelopes and ask people to scan QR codes. Police warn everyone not to scan these codes, which take you to fake websites meant to steal personal information.
Anyone who sees people leaving these cards should call 617-796-2123 immediately. This new scam adds to the growing number of schemes targeting shoppers in the area.
The Federal Trade Commission and Better Business Bureau have seen similar QR code tricks about fake package deliveries. Scammers send out emails promising rewards if you share your private information.
Newton’s growing scam problem points to a worrying pattern. Police say they’re seeing more cases where scammers use fake phone numbers to push people into buying gift cards.
“Be wary of anyone requesting payment in the form of a gift card or money transfer,” said Lt. Amanda Henrickson to Newton Beacon.
These scams get worse during busy shopping seasons when people are looking for deals. Scammers send scary messages with security camera photos to push people into buying gift cards.
Officials ask residents to protect their personal information and stay away from unknown links. Police are still looking for the people behind this parking lot scam.
