Livingstone College Offers Brockton High Students Free College Admission
On Tuesday, March 11, Brockton High School students received a surprise opportunity to accelerate their education. Livingstone College, a historically Black college in Salisbury, North Carolina, offered several students the opportunity to attend Livingstone tuition-free.
However, students must maintain a 3.75 GPA to qualify for a full college scholarship. Livingstone has made additional scholarship opportunities available even if students can’t meet this academic requirement.
“It’s just opening up the world here where it’s not just something where it’s a knock against local colleges, but the world is much bigger than Southeastern Massachusetts. If they have the opportunity to venture out on their own, to see something different, I just think it’s a great thing,” said Brockton High School Principal Kevin McCaskill in an interview with NewsCenter 5 WCVB-TV.
In 2024, Livingstone College awarded full scholarships to 25 Brockton High students. More than 30 will be offered a full-ride scholarship this year. Although students did not make any college commitments on Tuesday, the students selected understand that they can attend Livingstone for free.
Brockton High senior Biane Viana said she could not believe the news and was rushing to tell her mother in Cape Verde about her good fortune. “She’s going to be surprised, and she’s going to be so happy for me,” she said. “It just makes it feel like I could really take advantage of this opportunity.”
“You are given blessings to be a blessing to someone else. So you’re blessed to be a blessing. So shame on me if I get to the highest echelon of my career and not send the elevator back down to bring somebody else up,” said Livingstone College President Anthony Davis about extending this admission offer to Brockton students.
