MSP Bomb Squad Respond to Discovery of Possible World War I-Era Ordnance in Rockport
On Saturday, March 8, the Rockport Police Department and the Rockport Fire Department responded to a call from someone who had discovered a possible World War I-era ordinance in Rockport.
The call came when someone cleaning out a structure on Cleaves Street found what appeared to be a decommissioned 75mm artillery shell.
The Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad was alerted and dispatched to the location for further investigation. The Bomb Squad conducted an X-ray analysis of the object, but the results could not definitively ID the object.
According to a Boston 25 News report, the Bomb Squad ordered a controlled detonation of the device at the Rockport police gun range. The Rockport Fire Department, Rockport Fire Department Ambulance, and Beauport Ambulance were on site as a precaution during the detonation. No incidents were reported.
Authorities stated that there are currently no threats to public safety related to the object’s discovery.
