A Rivers Cuomo birthday is a cause for celebration. Narrowing down my favorite Weezer songs to six is a cause for consternation.

If you’re not in the know, this is my bit when a big-time rocker has a birthday. I crack open a six-pack of my favorite songs that they’ve had a hand in making. Just last week, I did it for Dave Navarro‘s birthday. That one was fun, as Dave’s done a ton outside of his work with Jane’s Addiction.

And while Rivers has written a ton for other projects and artists, too, I’m focusing on Weezer. Why? Because there’s so damn many great Weezer songs to choose from. Hell, I could just bang out my six favorite songs from the Blue Album and call it a day.

I won’t, though. That’s kind of a cop out. And besides, then I’d miss out on a bunch of other Weezer goodies from their later albums. I will, however, leave “Beverly Hills” off the list in solidarity with my boy Pat Finnerty.

As I started brainstorming beloved Weezer songs, I realized it might make things easier if I drafted my 14-year-old and had them throw a few in the mix. So I did. And they did. They’re a big Weezer fan, too.

We saw them together with Green Day at Fenway Park in 2021, then again when they played Boston Calling in 2022. They always put on a solid live show. So scroll through our mixed six-pack of Weezer favorites in honor of frontman, songwriter, and occasional mullet-sporter Rivers Cuomo.

I won’t tell you how old he is. That’s Hardy‘s bit. Listen to him weekdays from 4-7 p.m. on ROCK 92.9. Every weekday, he does a bit called: “Who’s Going To Make Us Feel Old?” Today, it will be Rivers’ turn.

  • "The World Has Turned And Left Me Here"

I love the Blue Album. It’s my favorite Weezer album. It’s one of my all-time favorite albums. It’s hella hard to choose a favorite song from it. But today, this is the song I choose.

  • "El Scorcho"

Pinkerton is a masterpiece, to be sure. This was the album’s leadoff single. When I hear this, I’m instantly transported to my college radio station, Northeastern’s WRBB.

  • "Records"

I really enjoyed 2022’s SZNZ EPs. “Records” is an absolute bop and proof that, even if you don’t like latter-day Weezer, Rivers hasn’t lost a thing when it comes to songwriting. The man is a master-crafter.

  • "Buddy Holly"

Kade’s favorite Weezer song is “Buddy Holly.” Every 14-year-old’s favorite Weezer song should be “Buddy Holly.”

  • "Pink Triangle"

Kade coming correct with another cut from Pinkerton. The kid has taste.

  • "Beverly Hills"

I said I wasn’t going to put this one on the list. But Kade insisted. “For the LOLs.”
