You can’t talk about the Big Game without talking about the Pats, so let’s get into some Patriots Super Bowl highlights from years past.

Currently, the New England Patriots hold the record for the most Super Bowl appearances, with 11. The franchise is tied with the Pittsburgh Steelers for the most Super Bowl wins of all-time, at 6. They’re also tied with the Denver Broncos with the most Super Bowl losses, at 5. When you take into account that all of this has happened over the span of the last 40 years, it’s even more impressive.

Of course, with this years Big Game, one of those records might get tweaked. If the San Francisco 49ers beat the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVIII, they’ll join the Pats and the Steelers in that six-win top-tier. Also worth noting: if the Chiefs beat the Niners, they will have won 3 of the last 5 Super Bowls, which will undoubtedly add fuel to the Mahomes vs. Brady fire.

That being said, Patrick Mahomes, Coach Andy Reid, and the Kansas City Chiefs have a lot more winning to do if they’re going to surpass what Tom Brady, Coach Bill Belichick, and the New England Patriots did between 2002 and 2019. Nine trips to the Big Game, six wins. We revisited those wins when the Pats announced they’d be parting ways with Belichick in January.

5 Patriots Super Bowl Highlights Fans Probably Forgot

Let’s revisit some decidedly different Pats Big Game moments, though. I can almost guarantee that these highlights won’t pop up on any other New England fan list. They’re the moments that, for one reason or another, you’ve forgotten all about. But in order to tell the complete story of this storied franchise, they’re moments that need to be revisited. So let’s all take a trip down Patriots Memory Lane, shall we?

  • Super Bowl XX

The 1985 season was a Cinderella story for the Patriots. They finished 11-5, in third place behind the New York Jets and Miami Dolphins, then improbably made it as a Wild Card all the way to the AFC Championship against the Dolphins where they “Squished the Fish.” Then, they were promptly annihilated by the Chicago Bears in the Super Bowl.

  • Super Bowl XXXI

It would take the Pats another decade-plus to make it back to the Big Game. They did in January of 1997, after Coach Bill Parcells and QB Drew Bledsoe led the team to an 11-5 record and the two-seed in the AFC. Once again, though, the franchise’s first Super Bowl victory was elusive, as they fell 35-21 to Brett Favre’s Green Bay Packers.

  • Super Bowl XLII

With the Brady and Belichick-led Patriots dynasty coming together in the early 2000s, the 2007 NFL season saw New England at full power: an undefeated season and playoff run that brought them back to the Super Bowl after a few seasons off to face off against a middling New York Giants team. Remember what happened next?

  • Super Bowl XLVI

Imagine having your perfect season ruined by a lesser team in the Super Bowl, then having a chance to redeem yourself a few years later, but falling short? Well, that’s what happened to the Patriots when they rematched the Giants in 2012.

  • Super Bowl LII

The New England Patriots vs. The Philadelphia Eagles. The top seed in the AFC vs. the Top seed in the NFC. 13-3 vs. 13-3. It’s a shame the Pats couldn’t pull this one off. They came close, though! And isn’t that what it’s all about at the end of the day: not winning, but having fun, learning, and growing.
