The man who faked his own death to avoid paying child support is our Douchebag of the Day on Dave & Chuck “The Freak!” People are willing to go to extreme lengths to avoid having to pay–but it’s hard to get more extreme than this. If you find out that you owe more than $100,000 you might try to think of some clever ways out, too!
However, we’re here talking about it because he did not get away with it. Find out how the story unfolded below!
Douchebag of the Day: Man Fakes Death To Avoid Paying Child Support
According to NBC News, a Kentucky man has admitted to faking his own death to avoid paying more than $100,000 in outstanding child support to his ex-wife. Jesse E. Kipf has since pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated identity theft and one count of computer fraud.
It’s a pretty crazy story. Clearly, he took some time to think this through because I wouldn’t have come close to doing what he did–or even thinking about it. According to NBC News, Kipf accessed the Hawaii death registry system using the details of a doctor living in another state and created a case for his own death. Then, he “assigned himself as the medical certifier for the case and certified that case,” per NBC News. That meant he was listed as deceased in many government databases.
In his mugshot, he looks pretty shocked to be caught. It’s definitely a look. Check out his mugshot via the Grayson County Detention Center below!

Additionally, Kipf was indicted on two counts of making false statements on applications in connection with federally insured financial institutions. The initial charges carried a prison sentence of over 30 years, per NBC News. After accepting a plea deal, he faces a maximum of seven years in prison and up to $500,000. Looks like he should have just paid the child support he owed from the beginning. It would have been a much better plan for all involved. Plus, that poor kid.

Cort Freeman was born and raised in Metro Detroit. He was named Clarkston High School 2009 Class Clown 13 years after graduating. Totally normal thing to happen. That’s thanks to his time spent as an Intern at Comedy Central and Social Media Correspondent for The Colbert Report. Cort has done comedy across the country, both standing up and sitting down. When he’s not trying to make you laugh on-air and online, he’s probably at home enjoying his favorite shows like Seinfeld, South Park, and The Office. He’s also totally uncomfortable writing about himself in the third person. Cort enjoys writing about comedy, food, sports, and entertainment. So, basically anything and everything.
