Well, a few years have passed since Work From Home was a big craze. Now, employers are doing all they can to try to get workers back in the office. They’re trying all sorts of different things to get people back in office. There’s Casual Friday, snacks in the break room, and some more interesting attempts. So, how are some employers trying to lure workers back to the office?
Some employers are turning to one of our senses to get us to come back and want to work in the office. However, is it enough to make us want to leave home?
How Are Employers Trying To Lure Workers Back To The Office?
According to reports, some employers are pumping fragrances and scents into offices. They believe the pleasant aromas in the hallways will welcome employees back into the office. Seems like they’re trying to create a mellow atmosphere.
The New York Post says in-person work in New York City has returned to 70% of pre-pandemic rates. Companies like Amazon and Meta have both implemented back-to-the-office policies, marking the beginning of the end of Work From Home.
Now, companies are hoping our noses will help bring us into the office. Companies are pumping custom fragrances into their office buildings. It seems like the goal is to create a sense, for lack of a better word, of belonging in the office.
As I remember learning during a Old Spice commercial, scent and memory are intrinsically interlinked and tied together. Perhaps that’s part of what they’re thinking with this decision.
The New York Post reports Theresa L. White, a professor and chair of the department of psychology at Le Moyne College, says, “People often do say that the sense of smell conjures up memories so well that they feel as if they were experiencing the event again.” So, maybe this would work is my workplace could find a way to make the halls smell like my home. Man, that would be awful.

Cort Freeman was born and raised in Metro Detroit. He was named Clarkston High School 2009 Class Clown 13 years after graduating. Totally normal thing to happen. That’s thanks to his time spent as an Intern at Comedy Central and Social Media Correspondent for The Colbert Report. Cort has done comedy across the country, both standing up and sitting down. When he’s not trying to make you laugh on-air and online, he’s probably at home enjoying his favorite shows like Seinfeld, South Park, and The Office. He’s also totally uncomfortable writing about himself in the third person. Cort enjoys writing about comedy, food, sports, and entertainment. So, basically anything and everything.
