‘Bill & Ted 4’ is in the Works
Bill & Ted fans had to wait nearly three decades for the third installment of the film franchise. However, it appears they won’t have to wait that long for a fourth film.
In a new interview with The Sarah O’Connell Show, Alex Winter (William “Bill” S. Preston, Esq.) said original Bill & Ted screenwriters Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon are currently working on a script for a fourth movie.
“There’s a really good idea that the writers came up with for a fourth that’s kind of obvious,” said Winter. “I don’t want to give it away — I can’t give it away because I would be drawn and quartered — but it is a really good idea … It will get written, and we’ll see if we can actually get it made.”
A timeline on Bill & Ted 4 is unknown. There was a 29-year gap between the release of Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey and Bill & Ted Face the Music. On top of that, the first draft of the third Bill & Ted movie existed in 2011, according to an archived article from The Atlantic. The eventual release of Bill & Ted Face the Music went through many changes due to the then-ongoing Coronavirus pandemic. Orion Pictures finally did a dual release of the movie in theaters and via Premium VOD on August 28, 2020.
Bill & Ted Face the Music had a worldwide gross of $6.27 million, per Box Office Mojo. Unfortunately, its budget was about $25 million. Obviously, that’s not a great ROI. Fortunately, the movie did significantly better thanks to Premium VOD. Deadline reported in September 2020 that the third Bill & Ted movie made about $32 million via Premium VOD, which charged $19.99 to stream the film.
Considering those numbers and the pandemic in the rearview, there’s clearly a much brighter outlook for Bill & Ted 4.
