Chelsea Handler is known for being unapologetic, so when asked by The View host Sunny Hostin about the threat of cancel culture, the comedian said only “idiots,” “racists,” and “sexists” have to worry about such things. During her appearance on the talk show Thursday (January 12), Hostin asked Handler, 47, “Do you ever get worried about getting canceled?”
“No, because I’m not an idiot, you know what I mean?” Handler says with a smile. “All you have to do is not be racist and not be sexist and not discriminate. That’s not a tall order. So everyone complaining about that is so annoying! You can’t work within these parameters and think of clever material that doesn’t harm other people or make another person a target?”
She added, “Start with yourself: I’m very self-deprecating because my life is a hot mess and I like to advertise that. And I have plenty of material to draw from. And I think anyone complaining about that should get a little more creative.”
The comedian said she found Twitter CEO Elon Musk “repugnant” and would leave Twitter if he remains in charge. “I want him to let go of Twitter. I would like that to be a nice, more organized place and forum that it was before.” Handler said. “Doesn’t he want to go to Mars or something? Why doesn’t he just go?”
Handler will be a part of a team of guest hosts who will fill in for the retired Daily Show host Trevor Noah. “I’m definitely going to talk about Elon Musk and George Santos. I’m chomping at the bit,” she said. Though she is only filling in for the time being, Handler said she is open to the possibility of taking over permanently as the first woman to host a “male talk show.” Handler told the ladies of The View, “Men are doing a great job on late night representing us, but they’re not women. We need women representing women.”
