Spring Activities for Your Dog
Spring has finally sprung and as we head outdoors we can’t forget about our favorite family member…our beloved dogs. One of the silver linings of Quarantine, was being able to spend an inordinate amount of time with our pets. And our families, but for the purpose of this post, let’s talk dogs. As things begin to open up and we slowly get back to “normal,” don’t forget to include your canine companion in your Spring activities. Everyone needs to get out right about now, including them. And you want to ease them back into being alone more frequently and for longer periods of time.
Here are a few Spring activity ideas to get outside with your pup.
Check Out a Dog Park
If you have a favorite dog park, try a new one. If you’ve never been, try one now. Your dog can make some new friends, get some fresh air and go leashless without you worrying about him running away. Do your research before hand to make sure there is enough room for humans to social distance, trees to provide shade and other amenities like water fountains and parking. Sometimes you’ll even come across a park equipped with agility equipment.
Obedience Training
The truth is you can teach an old dog new tricks. There’s probably never been a better time than now to start training your pooch, brush up on old lessons or teach them a new trick. A lot of us are home and the weather is starting to warm up, so why not take the lessons outdoors. Being outside will help your dog learn to focus while surrounded by distractions like smells and sounds. Training with your dog is also a wonderful way to build trust and a Spring activity that’s sure to offer some serious bonding.
Give Them A Spring Cleaning
Even if you’ve been grooming them over the winter months, it’s always good to give your dog a deep clean in the Spring. It will help the shedding process and, if they requires it, a trim will help their fur from getting tangled and help keep them cooler as the temperatures get warmer. If you’re not comfortable doing it yourself, give your local groomer a call or look for a mobile groomer in your area that will setup in your driveway. In either case, you will find that most are adhering to all Covid-19 regulations, but ask what the process is when booking your appointment.
Go Hiking
Grab your dog and head for the hills. This should truly be the #1 Spring activity on your list. Let’s be honest, we’ve all spent some extra time on the couch over the last year plus, so let’s get some steps in. Fresh air, sun and exercise can do a wonder for not only your mood, but also your dogs. They can enjoy new smells and really stretch their legs after winter. Plus, they just love spending time with you.

Take Them Swimming
Going to the beach is proven to brighten your mood, those negative ions doing their magic. So why not bring fido along? Swimming is a great low impact workout for them and does a wonder for sore joints. Even if your dog isn’t a fan of water, there’s room for them to run, roll in the sand and meet new dog friends.
