"2023 Rock in Review" sounds so...official. It's not. I just wanted to make a list of new songs ROCK 92.9 played this year.

When we first launched ROCK 92.9 back in April of 2019, we didn't play new rock. We billed ourselves as "The Next Generation of Classic Rock," and that's what we were. An updated take on what us radio nerds refer to as the "Classic Rock Format." No moldy oldies, just the big hits and some deep cuts from the '70s, '80s, '90s, and early '00s. And you listened! Thanks for that.

After awhile, however, we realized something was missing. And that something was a smattering of new rock to keep things from sounding stale and stagnant. Lucky for us, the last few years have been a boon, with artist you know and love that we play on ROCK 92.9 releasing new songs and albums. We've been playing them. And you're still listening! Thanks again for that.

2023 Rock in Review: New Rock You Heard on ROCK 92.9

The purpose of this is twofold. One, it's the end of the year, and I'm in full-on list mode. I already made my list of 12 choice 2023 rock albums. Then, I followed that up with a list of 12 rock songs that I loved from 2023. My personal tastes tend to run pretty eclectic as compared to what I play on the radio station, so I'm sure you'll find some unique surprises on that list.

Purpose number two is educate. Some of these songs you might have missed hearing on ROCK 92.9 this year. So here they are, collected for your listening enjoyment. Scroll through, take a listen, and keep listening to ROCK 92.9 as we'll absolutely continue the new rock trend into 2024. New Green Day album drops in January, and there's a Pearl Jam album rumored for later in the year. Stoked.

Weezer "Dark Enough To See The Stars"

Weezer wrapped up 2022 with their SZNZ: Winter EP in late December. We took this track and ran with it into 2023.

Ozzy Osbourne "Immortal"

Another holdover from 2022, Ozzy's Patient No. 9 album had some real rippers. And this one, featuring Mike McCready, is a standout.

Jimmy Eat World "Something Loud"

My absolute favorite track of 2023. Yes, it was released in 2022. Don't tell anyone.

Metallica "72 Seasons"

We got a new Metallica album in 2023, and it's chock-full of fine tunes. The title track, especially.

Linkin Park "Fighting Myself"

This was recorded during the Meteora sessions, but didn't make it onto the album. It was released as part of this year's 20th anniversary reissue.

Foo Fighters "Rescued"

But Here We Are made my top albums list. This song made my top songs list. New Foo, for you.

Foo Fighters "Under You"

What, I'm only supposed to play one new track from the new Foo album? This one rules, too.

Smashing Pumpkins "Empires"

ATUM is a 33-song rock opera released by the Smashing Pumpkins in 11-song pieces over the course of 2022 and early 2023. There's a lot of rock on there, and this is one of the best songs of the lot.

Guns N' Roses "Perhaps"

New Guns N' Roses? In this economy? Another not-actually-new song, but a new recording and it sounds great.

Staind "Lowest In Me"

Staind were back with a new album in 2023, Confessions of the Fallen. This one has a bad word in it: beware!

Got the title track to this one before the album actually dropped, so you know I had to play it.

Once the album dropped, I switched to this track, because it's more our speed here at ROCK 92.9.
