Man Arrested After Trying To Scam An Elderly Woman Into Buying Gold For Him To Steal
A man has been arrested in Florida after trying to scam an elderly woman into buying gold for him to steal. Thankfully, his plot was thwarted.
We’ve shared lots of scams on Dave & Chuck The Freak. This one seems to fit right in with most of the scams aimed at senior citizens. You can’t be too careful! Here’s how he tried to scam an elderly woman into buying gold for him to then steal.
Man Arrested After Trying To Scam An Elderly Woman
It’s important to make sure the senior citizens and elderly folk in your life are aware of popular scams that are targeting them. Senior citizens are often the most target and most vulnerable people to be scammed. You don’t want your loved ones giving away their life savings to a scammer. So, it’s always best to keep them informed. It could be a grandparent scam where the scammer pretends to be a grandchild in need of money or in legal trouble. That’s been a popular one lately. Also, it could be a gold or jewelry scam. That’s what happened here.
According to WCJB, Weikai Zhang, 42, convinced a 74-year-old woman to buy gold that would be delivered to her home where Zhang then planned on stealing it. It wasn’t a small amount of gold, either. MSN reports that she ordered more than 13 pounds of gold after being told in an apparent phone scam that her bank account was at risk and it was best to put her money into gold. By the way, that amount of gold would be valued at $500,000. That would be a huge pay day for these scammers.
However, when the golf arrived, law enforcement was able to inform her of the scam before it was too late. They even found Zhang in a vehicle near her home at the time and arrested him, per WCJB. That’s a close call and it sounds like he was ready to pounce once the package arrived.
Be On The Look Out For Grandparent Scams
Thankfully, she still has her life savings thanks to Ocala Police officers arresting the suspect. However, not every scam victim is this lucky. It could have very easily gone differently and this could have just been the very beginning of a string of scams. Who knows what she would have done if the package allegedly never came. She could have tried buying it again!
