What We Can Expect to See in Amazon Prime Video’s ‘Wheel of Time’ Season 3
Amazon Prime Video’s fantasy television series The Wheel of Time just got its season 3 release date. The series, based on the book of the same title by authors Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson, is set in a fantasy world where a group of powerful women, the Aes Sedai, can channel the One Power.
The Aes Sedai, led by the Amyrlin Seat, are divided into seven disciplines, or Ajahs. The Blue Ajah is dedicated to the pursuit of justice; the Brown Ajah is concerned with knowledge preservation; the Gray Ajah serves as mediators; the Green Ajah are warriors; the Red Ajah hunts those who use the One Power wrongfully; the Yellow Ajah are healers; the White Ajah is concerned with the truth; and a secret group, the Black Ajah, consists of members from the other disciplines who secretly serve the Dark One.
Only women are allowed to use the One Power safely. The One Power is the magical force that rotates the Wheel of Time, determining the pattern of human existence.
Season 1 showcased Moiraine Sedai, played by Rosamund Pike, a member of the Aes Sedai, and her Warder, Lan Mandragoran (Daniel Henney), in their quest to find the Dragon Reborn, prophesied to either save the world from the primordial evil, the Dark One, or break it. Her journey led her to the village of Two Rivers, where there were four potential candidates: Rand al’Thor (Josha Stradowski), Perrin Aybara (Marcus Rutherford), Mat Cauthon (Barney Harris for Season 1 and Dónal Finn for Season 2), and Egwene al’Vere (Madeleine Madden). Moiraine also discovered that the village’s leader and healer, Nynaeve al’Meara (Zoë Robbins), could also channel the power.
The first season also explored the characters’ journeys and their acceptance of the roles they must play to save the world, as well as Moiraine’s struggle with the politics within the Aes Sedai and her romantic relationship with the Amyrlin Seat.
Season 2 focused on Rand al’Thor’s training to become the Dragon Reborn while trying to avoid madness, since males who can channel the One Power but cannot control it, risk losing their sanity. This season also introduced Ishamael and the Forsaken, servants of the Dark One. Season 2 concluded with Rand being declared the Dragon Reborn and the revelation that all of the Forsaken had been freed.
