Overdecorated ’90s Christmas Trees Are Back In Style
Overdecorated ’90s Christmas trees are back in style! Farewell minimalism!
Fashion and trends are constantly changing. What’s considered tacky one year might be in the following year. It’s hard to keep up with trends but thanks to TikTok and social media, it’s easy to stay in-the-know. A few years ago, I remember the minimalist Christmas tree was the trend. You’d barely put anything on the tree. Just some lights maybe a little tinsel–no ornaments. Let the tree be the star. Now, things are changing. The overdecorated ’90s Christmas trees are back in style!
Are Overdecorated ’90s Christmas Trees Back In Style?
We’re now into December so chances are you’ve got your tree up or are taking the steps to prepare to get your tree up. Whether you go with a fake tree or a real tree you want to make sure it’s decorated nicely. This year, that means going above and beyond with the decorations on the Christmas tree. What used to be tacky is now in! So fill it with shiny bulbs, ornaments you made in Kindergarten, and more! Nothing is off limits anymore. The more the merrier this year.
Back in the ’80s and ’90s, it was common to put everything on the tree that it could handle. You’d have various colored bulbs, unique ornaments, DIY arts and crafts, tinsel, popcorn, multi-colored lights, and more! Then, lately, things seemed to have changed. People wanted a more sophisticated Christmas tree with few things on it. Colored lights were put away in favor of a more simple white light. Well, it appears that might be changing in 2024! We’re putting aside symmetry and a clean/uniform tree in favor of the chaos–and I am here for it. I can remember growing up with these ’90s trees that were decorated without coordination or a real plan. These weren’t Christmas trees meant for magazines, they were for home.
Of course, people are now divided by this. Some people want their simplicity back with their minimalist trees while others are rejoicing that they can finally decorate their tree the way it was when they were growing up. You don’t have to fake any sophistication this year! Still not familiar with what a ’90s Christmas tree looks like or what we’re talking about here? Check out some examples below.
Things were definitely different back then as you can see by the look on the daughter’s face, but I love it! That’s what I grew up with and it feels extra nostalgic. The New York Post points out that a lot of Gen Z aren’t in favor of it. What do you think? Are you in favor of the overdecorated Christmas tree or do you prefer the minimalist version?
