Most Dangerous Month for Massachusetts Walkers

February is the Most Dangerous Month for Massachusetts Walkers.

Some 27% of fatal crashes involving the death of a pedestrian.

Autumn and early spring are pretty dicey for pedestrians, with November and March ranking high for danger.

The safest month?

June, followed by July and April.

The personal injury lawyers at Zinda Law Group analyzed data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on  the number of car accidents and pedestrians killed in them between 2017 and 2021.

Some 111 fatal motor vehicle crashes were reported in February in the Baystate.

And that included the death of 31 pedestrians.

"These figures made February the most treacherous month, with 27.93% of these incidents involving a pedestrian fatality," according to the study. "Autumn and early spring proved to be more dangerous for pedestrians, with both November and March claiming second and third spot on the study. Precisely 27.74% of motor vehicle crashes involved the death of a pedestrian during November. Of the 43 pedestrians killed in fatal crashes, 19 were linked to nighttime incidents."

Summer is the safest time to walk in Massachusetts. In June, fewer pedestrians die in car crashes - 17 out of 164 accidents from 2017 to 2021. Only about 10.37% of fatal crashes result in pedestrian deaths, the lowest in any month.

July is also a safe month for pedestrians in Massachusetts.

It's the second safest with 23 pedestrian deaths in fatal crashes, around 14.38% of the total.

April has the lowest pedestrian death rate in fatal crashes. About 16.13% of the crashes result in pedestrian deaths, with 25 people losing their lives in 155 incidents.

A spokesperson for Zinda Law Group commented on the findings: “Evenings during the winter months are some of the most dangerous times to travel as a pedestrian. (Nightime saw More than 70% of pedestrians killed in a fatal crash," they said in a press release. "If you decide to take a walk in the darker months or during the evening, make sure to wear reflective clothing if possible and travel in well-lit areas. It is vital to always be aware of your surroundings for possible vehicles, removing earphones or reducing the volume of your music to ensure you move as safely as possible.”

Where Are Boston’s Most Deadly, Most Dangerous Rotaries We Fear?

We know them all. Sadly, we are very familiar with Boston's most deadly, dangerous rotaries. It's one of 712 reasons that working from home wasn't so bad.

Massachusetts  drivers always make the top five in worst drivers. BUT, in our defense, the odd and difficult road system in our great city was not built for modern day driving. When New York City and Chicago are considered easier places to drive, you know we have our hands full.

According to a 2021 Boston.com poll:

...in the responses to our latest poll asking people for their least favorite rotaries in Greater Boston; almost 350 drivers responded, using no shortage of adjectives in doing so: “horrifying,” “terrifying,” and “painful” were all well represented, along with the phrases “hot mess,” “nightmare fuel,” and “hell of all hells.”

Well it's two years later. Is it worse, or better? We did an informal poll with our listeners, asking where are Boston's most deadly, most dangerous rotaries we fear?

Our listeners have spoken, and were VERY passionate and specific on our towns circle's of death. Many that the poll shared the same frightening rotaries. It seems like nothing has changed since 2021. Listeners also added a few famous rotaries that Boston.com didn't mention.

Stats

6271 viewed our poll.

149 commented, sharing the rotaries they fear the most.

We did not ask listener age, location, or how often they drive, as it was a very informal poll.

But it was clear that they had strong opinions! In all honesty, there are MANY many more dangerous rotaries that our listeners shared! But we thought these were the most shared, and the most familiar. We appreciate our listeners and how they took the time to share these rotaries. Maybe with this intel, folks will drive a little more prepared, armed with this knowledge.

So, are you ready? Buckle up and let's take our daily scary drive!

Newton Corner "The Circle Of Death"

Chad Gagnon: Newton Corner, The Circle Of Death.

This rotary seems to be one of the more "popular" hazards according to our poll. I have driven it many times. If you don't pay attention, you could end up in Watertown, being an hour late for life.

Bell Circle

Almost 30% mentioned Bell Circle! Some also called this a "Circle Of Death!"

Fresh Pond Parkway

I used to live RIGHT near there and used it daily. I'm lucky to be alive. The neighborhood was nice, but what a terrible rotary!

Kelly Square, Worcester

It's not Boston, but it WAS a world famous death trap before they updated it for the opening Polar Park. To me, still dangerous, and famous!

Cherie does not agree:

Not Boston but Worcester's "Peanut" that
replaced Kelly Square, is one of the biggest traffic
disasters on the planet. I actually drive
around the city to avoid it. Even during non
peak times it's a joke and forget rush hour..
This image shows all the roads and the
direction of traffic. There are also
crosswalks to add pedestrians to the mix.
They took a bad intersection and made it
10xs worse!

Kosciuszko Circle (Morrissey and Day boulevards and Columbia Road)

It should be called KAMIKAZE CIRCLE. You gotta be kidding me. I drove this for FIVE plus years, and I can't believe I made it with zero accidents. I saw a few. I'm thankful that I don't have to drive it anymore!

Wellington Circle, Medford

Karen: The BIG ONE in Medford, where Kappy's is like 9 exits off. It's like being in a ring with a bull, waving a red cape.

I know that one near Kappy's Liquors. Now I NEED  a drink.

Route 2: Near Massachusetts Correctional Institution

Almost 50% mentioned this one!

Denise: Concord Rte 2 prison rotary, insane!

Peg: "definitely, Concord rotary!"

Bethany: "Concord, FIVE WAYS!"

Jamie: "Rt 2 Concord!"

Patti: "Route 2 in Concord!"

Eric: "Route 2 Concord"

Meg: "Concord Ma prison rotary"

Kim: "Concord near the prison"

Scott: "Route 2"

Bourne Bridge

We can't leave this nationally famous circle of death, out. If we survive it, summer fun begins!

Nikki: "Any on the Cape during the summer.."

Steve: "Bourne Bridge Cape Side"

Michael: "Falmouth and Bourne rotaries are tough"

Brown Circle Rotary (Broadway Circle)

Terri:

"I Don't Give A SH**T Circle" nicknamed because people driving around don't give a sh**t. It's at routes 107/60. Also known as Broadway Circle, also known as Brown Circle."

Meryl: "the one going into Logan, I just shut my eyes.."
