This is according to the website www.travel.alot.com who did a recent survey asking local residents in specific cities in each state. They also took a look at websites like "Niche" and "Reddit" to determine their rankings. What exactly does ugly city mean? Think of beautiful landscapes, gorgeous scenery and stunning architecture. Okay, now think of the OPPOSITE of that. That is what is considered ugly. Not necessarily the people that live there. It's more so the esthetics of the city itself. So why Brockton? Let's take a little bit of a deep dive as to how this was determined.
So they really don't say much about the "city of champions." What is said is that the only interesting part of the city is City Hall. According to the website, the rest of the city of Brockton's buildings are built like "a budget version of Paris with all of the straight-edged roads, squished townhouses, and a famous library." They then mention that Brockton is home to a couple of boxing champions so at least that makes the city interesting. OUCH! They also mention that in 2010, a world record was set for "having 872 people wearing Santa Hats wearers in one place at one time." Not sure why that counts for anything, but okay.
On top of the ugly cities in the country, this travel site also looked at the ugliest buildings in the country. They called it the "most unsightly buildings" in the country and yes, we have a building here in Massachusetts on the list. Boston's City Hall building was voted the 19th ugliest in the country. Vermont: Essex Junction
Residents in Essex Junction say there are plenty of outdoor things to do here, like kayaking. However, there's not much else and there are a ton of potholes.
Rhode Island: Harrisville
"While the public schools and recreational activities are nice, the cost of living is way too high given the terrible housing market. Expect to hold a low-tier job and overpay for a house that will crumble beneath your feet."
Maine: Howland
In Howland's defense, they don't really mention specifics as to why it was voted #1. The only negative thing said is that there is no 24 hour pizza place. Small population and "lackluster views."
New Hampshire: Somersworth
According to residents here, the roads are cracked, the crime rate is very high and the water smells weird.
New Jersey: Camden
According to a Reddit user: ""Basic maintenance for property has an ongoing cost, and nobody is willing to pay even that amount of money to live there. Now, after years of abandonment, there are additional repair costs that would be necessary. It's cheaper to go elsewhere."
Michigan: Detroit
Not really a shock here. Things have gotten so bad, even native Detroit-ers say it's ugly. One user said " "I mean, just look at a satellite map of Detroit. Once you leave the i94, m10, i75, i375 rectangle (the path that Woodward takes), it gets real ugly real fast."
Connecticut: New Haven
One reddit user described New Haven as "not safe" and run down.
New York: Albany
According to this Reddit user: "Albany, New York, just feels like a really big Greyhound bus station to me. In the summer it's kinda gross, but in the winter it's a muddy, gray sh*tpile. Whenever I've found myself there, I've felt like I needed to escape it — probably in an old-school bus with razor wire strung around it and sharpened broomstick handles protruding from the windows."
Florida: Panama City
Residents here say the city is loaded with ugly homes and it's bringing them down. "Boring and tasteless homes" to be exact.
California: Bakersfield
There were no specifics named, only that people think the city itself is an eye sore. One user actually said they need to take Tylenol before driving through it.
