UPDATE: Unfortunately, Spencer the Dog has crossed the Rainbow Bridge. His owner said, “He spent his last day doing for himself, eating his sweet potato treats, drinking water and enjoying visitors.”

Spencer the Dog is a Boston Marathon favorite. Over the years, people have come to love seeing Spencer, almost as much as they love seeing the runners. Spencer is a 12-year-old therapy dog who has been cheering on runners for 8 years. You can find him in his usual spot near the start of the marathon near Ashland State Park. You'll also see him with his Boston Strong flag in his mouth.

Last year, The Boston Athletic Association named Spencer the Dog the official dog of the 126th Boston Marathon saying that he "has become an icon for Boston Marathoners every year." He was also given his own "Spencer bib" to celebrate.
Behind the scenes, Spencer has been dealing with many health issues. He faced cancer twice and in February 2022, he completed his fourth chemotherapy and went into remission. Unfortunately, in the fall, he was diagnosed with untreatable liver cancer.
Spencer was celebrated yesterday with a special portrait at the Fairmont Copley Plaza. Spencer's owner Richard Powers says that his family is “beyond devastated to know this amazing angel will leave us soon.” While the original painting will be in Richard’s home, the artist Tom Mosser, says his goal is to produce both paper and canvas prints of the image of Spencer holding his “We are Boston Strong” flag. He plans to donate $100 of every print sold to the Morris Animal Foundation’s Golden Retriever Lifetime Study.
