There are quite a few fancy towns in the Boston 'burbs. But recently, finance website GOBankingRates complied a list of the wealthiest suburbs in the United States. Out of 50, there are 4 Massachusetts towns among the richest in America!
We all know a town isn't great because of it's wealth, but it's people and resources. Last year, I wrote an article on the Massachusetts towns with the best downtowns. I find that to be an important part of a community. I've moved a lot in my lifetime and have always appreciated a town that has a great center for shopping, dining and gathering.
I recently discovered which Massachusetts towns are among richest in America in The Patch/Massachusetts, where they shared the information gathered by GOBankingRates. Before I peaked at the Boston area suburbs that made the top 50 wealthiest in the nation, I took a guess and was wrong. I thought for sure it would be the town of Weston.
Here Are The Massachusetts Towns Among The Richest in America?
The wallets are fatter in these Boston area burbs where home prices are through the roof and annual incomes are among the unimaginable to most of us. We are all well aware that Massachusetts is an expensive state in which to live. However, it's also well known that salaries may run higher here. In addition, the Bay State has some of the best colleges and universities in the world. That may help in churning out future higher paid employees.
So, without further ado... These 4 Massachusetts Towns are among the richest in America:
- Wellesley
- Winchester
- Lexington
- Needham
The Norfolk County town of Wellesley scores the highest rankin Massachusetts at #11. Here, the average household income is $367,801 and the typical home value is roughly $1.97 million. Ouch.
Winchester came in at #31. The Middlesex County town has an average household income of $283,632, while the typical home is valued at $1.6 million.
See the full list here, and if you are wondering what the wealthiest town in the United States is, it's Scarsdale, New York. Fun fact to share at the dinner table tonight.
Also located in Middlesex County is the beautiful town of Lexington, which ranked at #35 in this list of Massachusetts towns among the richest in America. The average household income here is about $281,187, while home values are close to $1.6 million.
Finally coming in at #42 is the Norfolk County town of Needham. Here the average household income is $267,951. Meanwhile Needham's typical home is valued at $1.5 million.
I was thinking about homes the other day. Isn't it strange that even if we spend 50 years in one house, it's really not "ours." There might have been people before you and there will probably be people after you living there. But it still feels so intimately ours. I thought it was a deep thought anyway. lol
But it opens up this broader conversation: what cities in America have the most historical homes? And, more hyper-locally focused, which towns in Massachusetts have the most historical homes per capita? We do have the 2nd most historical homes in the country, ya know?
What is a "historical home' anyway?
In the United States, a home is typically considered a historical home, and eligible for historical designation or recognition, if it meets certain criteria related to its age, architectural significance, and historical importance.
What US city has the most historical homes? Is it Boston?
No, it's not Boston. Though we did rank in the Top 10! The team at Assurance IQ crunched data from the National Park Service’s National Register of Historic Places to figure out which US cities and states have the most registered historical homes.
