Massachusetts City One of the Deadliest for Pedestrians – Best & Worst Driving Cities in Mass
Massachusetts has one of the worst cities in America for pedestrians, according to a new study. Some cities and towns are made for walkers while others… well… just aren’t. I’m sure you’ve been aware when you’ve been in an area which has put much planning and care into protecting it’s pedestrians while being mindful of motorists. I’m sure you’ve seen the other side too as you walk while surrounded by traffic thinking to yourself ” a sidewalk would be nice!”
A new study by 1Point21 Interactive in collaboration with Miller and Hines Law dives into the varying levels of pedestrian satisfaction and safety. The study analyzed pedestrian fatality rates and found that only two New England cities made the Top 25 Deadliest Cities in America for Pedestrians.
Pompano Beach, Florida was named the most dangerous, deadliest city in the US for pedestrians. There were 8.9 pedestrian fatalities per 100,000 residents in the year period analyzed. Victorville, California came in second worst and Baton Rouge, Louisiana came in third most dangerous. I like saying “most dangerous” more than “deadly” as said in the study. “Deadly” gives me the heebie-jeebies for obvious reasons however they will be used interchangeably in this article depending what pops out of my fingers at the moment while typing.
New Haven, Connecticut was named the 14th deadliest (switched it up there, see?) city in America for pedestrians. There were 6.48 pedestrian fatalities per 100,000 residents in New Haven in the year period looked at in the study.
And the most dangerous city in New England for pedestrians is….. SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS. Springfield was unlucky #13 in the country when it comes to deadliest cities for pedestrians. There were 6.49 pedestrian fatalities per 100,000 residents in the year observed for the study.
