Clean and safe tap water is a fundamental necessity that we often take for granted. Whether we're quenching our thirst with a refreshing sip or enjoying a warm shower, the assumption is that our tap water is clean and safe. However, its quality can vary widely across different states due to differences in water systems and environmental factors. A recent study has identified which states can proudly claim to have the cleanest tap water.
Great Green Wall Health, a health information website, analyzed data from the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to assess the number of Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) violations in each of the 48 contiguous states during 2022. These violations relate to breaches of SDWA requirements within public water systems (PWS). To ensure a balanced evaluation accounting for differences in system sizes, they also computed the proportion of violations in relation to each state's population, resulting in a ranked list of the final outcomes.
Massachusetts ranks in the top 8 for cleanest tap water
According to their data, Massachusetts provides clean drinking water, with 2,888 violations for its nearly 7 million residents. State officials confidently assert that Massachusetts' public water supplies rank among the nation's finest. They emphasize on their website, "Every day, more than six million Bay Staters turn on the tap and take a drink of water from a public water supply. The public water supplies in Massachusetts are among the best in the country, and they are subject to the most stringent government standards in the world."
Number one state with the cleanest tap water
At the top of their ranking is Kentucky, which reported 100 public water system violations for its population of 4,512,310 residents. It's important to note, as outlined in Great Green Wall Health's findings, that local officials recently addressed concerns regarding potential contamination resulting from a significant train derailment that occurred in the neighboring town of East Palestine, Ohio, in February.
