Madonna Contracts ‘Serious Bacterial Infection,’ Tour On Hold

Madonna's Celebration World Tour has been postponed until further notice. The singer, 64, has been hospitalized due to a "serious bacterial infection." On Wednesday, Madonna's talent manager and producer Guy Oseary released a statement on Instagram that she was hospitalized over the weekend. He wrote that the "Like a Prayer" singer's condition is expected to keep her in the ICU for a "several day stay." Noting that her health is improving and is still under medical care at the time of his posting, "a full recovery is expected."

Giving an update to her fans on what will become of her 35-city global tour, which was expected to begin on July 15 in Vancouver, Canada, Oseary says: "At this time, we will need to pause all commitments, which includes the tour. We will share more details with you soon as we have them, including a new start date for the tour and for rescheduled shows." Following his post, a source tells People that "she is out of the ICU now and recovering." Page Six reported that Madonna was "found unresponsive" and was intubated for at least one night before having the tube removed. At this time, Madonna has yet to address her health herself.

As we previously reported, Madonna's tour will be highlighting her catalog of music from the past 40-plus years. The world tour is expected to be the Queen of Pop’s first-ever career retrospective, spanning back to her 1983 self-titled debut album. Madonna last toured in 2019 and early 2020 on her Madame X tour, which struggled with production delays and Madonna’s recurring hip and knee injuries. Though the tour ultimately earned strong critic reviews, its late start time often angered ticket holders and prompted two class action lawsuits from fans. Madonna’s 2008-2009 Sticky and Sweet Tour is the highest-grossing tour by a female artist ever, netting $407 million. Her most recent Madame X theater run grossed $36.4 million.
