Derek Chauvin Sentenced 22 and a Half Years For Murder of George Floyd
Derek Chauvin was sentenced 22 and a half years for the May 2020 murder of George Floyd.
Per The New York Times, “The sentence, delivered by Judge Peter A. Cahill of Hennepin County District Court, came more than a year after a widely shared cellphone video captured Mr. Chauvin pressing his knee on the neck of Mr. Floyd for more than nine minutes along a Minneapolis street.”
The New York Times added, “Judge Peter A. Cahill said before sentencing Derek Chauvin in the murder of George Floyd that his sentence will not be based on emotion. ‘But at the same time,’ he said, ‘I want to acknowledge the deep and tremendous pain that all of the families are feeling, especially the Floyd family.'”
In April, the former Minneapolis police officer was convicted on all charges by a jury in the Hennepin County court. The 12 jurors found him guilty of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.
