New England states are all over the Top 10 in this this new list of the greenest states in the United States. Just in time for Earth Day!
Do you celebrate Earth Day? Do you volunteer with a big organization like the Sierra Club? Keep it local by cleaning up around your own neighborhood? I try to mix it up with a little of both. This most recent Earth Day, however, I kept it super-local. My kids and I joined my parents in doing some cleanup around their cabin in Maine. Winter storms had brought down trees all over the property. Three hours of chainsawing, handsawing, and dragging brush had the joint looking pretty spiffy!
BetMassachusetts released a new ranking right before Earth Day. Their Top 10 Greenest States list used metrics from WalletHub and WorldPopulationReview to determine which states are doing the best job of taking care of the planet. The two main metrics--environmental quality and ecofriendly behavior--could net each state up to 50 points, giving states the opportunity to score 100 total points. You know, kinda like when you'd take a test back in the day and half your points would come from the multiple choice portion and half would come from the essay. I don't miss those days.

It should come as no surprise that four of the six New England states placed in the Top 10. In fact, New England states landed in the top two slots. See who landed where (and yes, Massachusetts is one of the states) and what they scored below. And remember: Earth Day is every day. So even if you didn't volunteer or donate on this most recent Earth Day, you can still find an organization to make a donation or to get involved. The planet is counting on you!
