Launched in March 1981 and then known as the Rock Albums and Top Tracks Chart, the Billboard Mainstream Rock Songs Chart is determined solely on airplay from rock radio stations in the United States.

The Rock radio format has certainly evolved since 1981, but it should come as no surprise that a number of iconic bands and artists have dominated this chart for decades.
