Massachusetts Christmas Tree Sales Soaring as Farms Run Out Opening Weekend
As local farms have dropped from 150 to 100, sellers are struggling to keep up with the huge demand for trees. Boston Christmas Trees, which has been around for 50 years, saw customers flood in right after Thanksgiving. Most people picked through balsam and Fraser firs brought in from Quebec.
Sam Morin, owner of Arrowhead Acres in Uxbridge said, “In other years or years in the past, the following week and beyond Thanksgiving is usually the busiest, but that trend seems to have changed.”
While there are fewer local farms now, sellers keep meeting demand by bringing in Canadian trees. This change ensures fresh trees are available, even as Massachusetts growers become less common. The surge in balsam fir sales lines up with major changes in where trees come from, as suppliers from Canada and Nova Scotia now lead the market, deciding which types of trees end up in local lots.
