Quincy Opens New Ice Rink with Wheelchair Access, Free Skating
Located just half a mile from its old location, the $418,661 rink boasts several improvements. Skaters can enjoy smooth ice, strong barriers, and a warm place to take a break from the cold. With a $6,000 investment in ice sleds, people who use wheelchairs can now get out on the ice too. Mayor Thomas Koch pushed to keep admission free, making sure every resident can enjoy the rink.
The same group that runs New York’s Bryant Park skating rink is managing this Massachusetts location. The rink is open daily from noon to 8 p.m. Operating costs are lower than last year’s $477,000. Parking at Kilroy Square Garage costs just $1 per hour. The rink stays open through February 23, 2024, lining up with local school vacations.
Natural Resources Commissioner David Murphy continues to support the free admission policy that proved successful last year, saying that “Mayor (Thomas) Koch wants to make sure anyone that wants to skate isn’t prohibited by costs.” A heated tent is set up for visitors, where they can rent skates and get ready to hit the ice.
