Massachusetts has been added to the list of states impacted by a current recall of cucumbers from SunFed Produce.

The company said in a November 27 press release that it's recalling all sizes of their whole fresh American cucumbers packed in bulk cardboard containers that featured their "SunFed" label. Additionally, cucumbers packed in a "generic white box or black plastic crate" are also part of the recall.

SunFed Produced added that cucumbers packed in these containers with the grower name "Agrotato, S.A. de C.V." and sold between October 12, 2024 and November 26, 2024 are being recalled due to them potentially being contaminated with Salmonella. Symptoms of Salmonella include fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. Exposure to Salmonella in young children, seniors, and others with compromised immune systems can even lead to fatal infections.

In addition to Massachusetts, other states impacted include Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Maryland, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin & Wyoming and the Canadian provinces of Alberta, British Columbia, Calgary, Saskatchewan, & Ontario.

SunFed Produce noted, "The cucumbers would have reached consumers through foodservice and retail outlets that may be located in states other than those listed above."

This recall comes when cucumbers had a surprising breakout year in 2024 thanks in large part to TikToker Logan Moffitt. Affectionately known as the "Cucumber Guy," Moffitt went viral this summer for sharing many different cucumber salad recipes on TikTok, where he has 6.9 million followers. His most viewed cucumber salad video for California Roll cumbers currently has 43.2 million views.

Moffitt told AllRecipes.com that he loved cucumbers as a young boy, and that love has only grown as he grew up. He said of his viral stardom, "I think the most surprising part is just that I was just playing around on the first video. I just turned the camera on, and I was like, ‘I'm just gonna make my video about the cucumber,’ because it's true, sometimes you need to eat an entire cucumber, and, it's just so surprising how much my little sayings have resonated on social media."

A downside of the cucumber salad trend is that it led to many people injuring themselves while using a mandolin slicer. In fact, the injuries were so common that many media outlets -- including The Washington Post and Today -- published articles on how to safely use the kitchen device.
