What happened when a kid was gifted an octopus for his birthday? Well, it wasn't what the family expected...but scientists could have seen it coming.

It's safe to say that next year he'll probably just get an XBox. Here's how a fun gift idea backfired on a family in Oklahoma.

This Oklahoma family thought they were giving their 9-year-old son a fun gift with an octopus on his birthday. However, it soon backfired on them when that octopus had 50 octopus babies. That meant they had to get many more aquariums and lost a lot of space in their home to take care of all these octopi, along with thousands of dollars on food supplies and water damage repairs, according to Daily Mail.

Like many kids, Cal Clifford loves octopi. He's been obsessed since he was very little. Who could blame him? They're unique, adorable, and intelligent. There's a lot to love about an octopus. Cal's dad Cameron told the New York Times that Cal always would ask for an octopus for his birthday. Finally, his wish came true. However, it was far from a dream come true.

Cal cried when he was told he was finally getting that coveted octopus. It was all he wanted! Soon, the family introduced him to his new pet Terrance. They had a nice set-up for him and everything. Terrance had a nice little home for himself. However, a problem was quickly realized. The family soon learned that their lovely boy Terrance was not a boy. Terrance is a female octopus. Time for a quick science lesson: female octopi can have babies. Well, that's what happened.

Afterwards, the family had to arrange 50 separate aquariums for all of the octopi. Some didn't make it, as is expected; however, roughly half of the 50 babies survived which is more than average. It was unexpected and can be quite stressful, but seems like the family is making the most of it. They're seeing it as a family bonding activity. Now, the family is blowing up on TikTok (@doctoktopus) because of all of this. So, some good is coming out of it.
