It's the time of year when couples seem to be the focal point. However, nowadays, not having a significant other is also understandably celebrated. SmartAsset recently detailed the 2024 cities that have the most single people in America, and Boston is in the top 10.
"Common advantages of being single include greater career flexibility and lower expenses," SmartAsset explained prior to unveiling the results of their study. To compile this data, 118 cities across the country with populations of 100,000 or more were analyzed. Specifically, the age demographic of 15-44 was the primary focal point. Overall, divorce rate by city and marriage rate by city were ranked. As was the average number of single men compared to single women and vice versa.
Boston Ranked As The 7th City With The Most Single People
SmartAsset's results in the category of cities with the most single people revealed that Boston seems to be filled with them. It's important to note that this subject is specific to those people who have never been married. So, divorced folks or widows/widowers were not applicable.
The percentage they found of single people in Boston was 51%. Here is how that compares to the other cities in the top 10 for single people. As you can see, there is not a large gap in percentage points that differentiates the bunch. Detroit was number one at 58.5%. Then the rest of the top 10 lists as follows:
- Cincinnati, Ohio: 56.9%
- Rochester, New York: 56.7%
- Syracuse, New York: 56.5%
- Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania: 56%
- Washington, District of Columbia: 55.9%
- Boston, Massachusetts: 55.1%
- Milwaukee, Wisconsin: 54.8%
- Atlanta, Georgia: 54.3%
- Cleveland, Ohio: 54.0%
If you are wondering which city has the least amount of singles, SmartAsset states, "Nearly 60% of the population is married in Fremont, CA." This northern California region outside of San Francisco also has the lowest divorce rate.
As we head into Valentine's Day week in Boston, there are plenty of options to have an enjoyable day on your own. Furthermore, with Boston being a top city for singles, perhaps some people will end up meeting their future significant other.
Most Romantic (and Affordable) Date Spots in America
Who says romance has to be expensive? Sure, a fancy, expensive night out is one way to celebrate love and romance. But, it doesn't have to be about the big dollars. As the saying and song go, "Can't buy me love." In that spirit, let's look into some of the most romantic, and affordable, date spots in America. Sparks can totally fly here. Trust me.
Before we get to those date locations, here are some tips on affordable dates. If it's a first date and you really have no idea if you two are going to hit it off, you don't have to do the traditional dinner. Why spend the time and money if the date might not even create a spark? Instead, try meeting for coffee or drinks at the bar. That way, if you two aren't feeling each other, you won't have to stick through salad, dinner and dessert. You can have a drink and cut your losses. If you two are feeling a vibe, you can schedule a second date that's a full dinner, which will allow for more time to get to know each other.
Fast-forward to when you're further into a relationship. If you're going out to dinner and to the bar a lot with your new love, that's great, but it can get costly. There's nothing wrong with Netflix and chill for a date night. You can still make it special. For example, invite your sweetie over and order their favorite takeout dish. How romantic, right? Oh, and get some gourmet, flavored popcorn, if you know what kind of treats they like. That's not only romantic but very thoughtful.
Now that we've gone through some casual date ideas that won't break the bank, let's get into the most romantic, and affordable, date spots in America.
