Fifty Grande released a list of the best new 2023 hotels that opened this season, and a New England resort was named among them.
The report points out how this time of year is quite nice for travel. The rates are in a down period, post-summer, and pre-holiday rush. "To inspire your exploration, some insanely cool new properties opened this summer across the country," Fifty Grande states.
Though some of the hotels listed here are ideal for warmer climates, they offer plenty of entertaining options in all seasons. Or perhaps you are already exploring summer plans for 2024. Regardless, these best new hotels are scattered across the country, from the east coast of New England to the Pacific shores in San Diego. Their common theme is that each has a boutique charm to them. In addition, they are on the smaller side, and display a unique character. Furthermore, none of them is part of a large chain.
In New England, we will head north to Maine to a beachside resort.
The York Beach Surf Club
This hotel was named and themed after a surf club of the same name that started in 1964. In 2020, this property was purchased and completely renovated to open as this new surf-inspired destination.
"After a multi-million dollar restoration with the addition of the new pool, food & beverage program, and fully renovated buildings and bungalows, the property is ready for its next 50 years and generations of York visitors," the York Beach Surf Club states. In fact, this new hotel vision was implemented by the son of a local surfing legend. Sonny Perkins and his son Taylor are the creators (and operators) behind this hotel. "The design is Scandinavian, with long lines and light woods dominating the common areas, rooms, and two-room bungalows," Fifty Grande explains.
Of course, the beach options at this destination are the main attraction. However, there is also the Pineapple All Day Café and Daybreaker Coffee for you to enjoy. There is also a heated pool to go along with the ocean waters. The walls are decorated with unique artwork, and open-air yoga classes each morning.
Lastly, you can't ignore that gnarly surf at your fingertips. The beach is known for having consistent surf breaks welcoming to all levels. Over the summer months, there are surf camp options here as well.
5 Of The Best Outlets For Surf Attire In New England
The waves are starting to cooperate here in New England, so now is the time to get outfitted in the raddest gear. Here, I will take you through five of the best outlets to get surf attire in Massachusetts.
Over the past ten years, the shores of Rhode Island and Massachusetts have become hotspots for catching some of the best waves on the Atlantic coast. In recognition of the region fully adopting surf culture, major retail brands have opened locations in the area over the past year. Pairing national chains with local small business household names has made the area an east coast surfing hotspot. Jack Johnson, a Hawaiian north shore native, and the heart and soul of modern acoustic surf music, headlined the 2022 Levitate Music and Arts Festival.
What Is Surf Attire?
The question is simple but the answer is complex. Obviously, the most crucial component to proper surf gear is a good surfboard. Many outlets allow you to rent, but once you are ready to take up the sport regularly, it's imperative that you have the board that is right for you. The best friend of the surfboard is a wetsuit. Often these items can be purchased from the same location. Though you can order wetsuits on Amazon or other digital retail outlets, they all seem to fit differently. Trust me, a loose wetsuit where water gets in the neck is one of the more initiating feelings in the water. Other necessary surfboard accessories include wax and a leash.
Finally, no surfer is properly equipped without attire to show you are a surfer when you are out of the water. Some of the stores we will list sell clothing that is representative of surf culture. In fact, one particular outlet makes their clothing with the beach in mind. They use recycled garments and often lead philanthropic efforts to help make our oceans cleaner.
Whether you are looking for a new board to hang ten with during the summer of 2023, or for athletic wear to sport while surf training in the winters, these five outlets for surf attire in New England are open and ready for you to cruise right in.
