Not exactly a title we can be proud of , but yeah, according to recent research Massachusetts is one of the most sleep deprived states in the country! (She said while yawning). What's up with that? Well, the Medical Marijuana pros at Leafwell put in the work and have come up with the answers. Their research has uncovered which states are losing the most sleep.

Leafwell investigated the average nightly sleep duration in each of the United States. Also, they examined the number of internet searches for terms ranging from "insomnia" to "I can't sleep" and "lack of sleep," according to their article.  Below, you will see the overall  ‘Sleep Score.’ This was calculated in order to find the sleepiest states. Other sources for this research include the CDC and Google Keyword Planner.

Who's Loosing The Most Sleep

Surprisingly, Hawaii residents were "found to suffer the most with their sleep." Their overall score was just 9.87 out of 100! Wouldn't you think that the weather and overall vibe of Hawaii would help with sleep? I mean, they live in paradise. Not so surprising was seeing New York in the top 10. After all, New York City is the "city that never sleeps." New York chimed in at #6 overall, as the most sleep deprived with a score of 30.37 out of 100. Plus, New York reported the highest number of sleep problem searches of any of the states.

Who else was in the top 10? Another surprise. Georgia chimed in at #2 for the most sleep deprived. Their rating was 19.68 out of 100. Those Georgia peaches aren't helping with a good night's rest. Here, short sleep duration is a major issue with the 7th highest rate in America. Nevada was #4 in this study. That totally makes sense, with people up late gambling, all the lights of Las Vegas, and all the great shows!

What About The Bay State

So, what about Massachusetts? Leafwell's data show Massachusetts ranking 9th out of all the states for an overall score of 34.14 out of 100. Here in the Bay State was also apparently have the 4th highest number of monthly searches for sleep issues. "Insomnia" was the most searched sleep related term. Good news though, in Mass we do relatively well in the sleep duration portion of this project. Massachusetts ranked as the 19th lowest in the states.

As Lewis Jassey from Leafwell, shared, "Lack of sleep can have a serious effect on our everyday lives, and there are several reasons why we may struggle to sleep, with both internal and external factors playing a role in this. For many people, the first port of call is to turn to the internet for answers, but this can often result in self-diagnosing, or looking for ways to self-medicate that don’t address the root cause of the problem. In addition to your own research, it's important always to seek professional advice from your doctor if you frequently experience issues falling or staying asleep.”

  2. Georgia
  3. Nevada

  7. Alabama

5 Sleep Habits To Cheat Death According to Boston Hospital

If you're one of those people who says "I'll sleep when I'm dead",  you might find out faster than someone who is getting good zzzs!

But there's good news! There are 5 sleep habits to help you cheat death according to a Boston hospital.

If you follow these 5 sleeping habits, you’re 30% less likely to die from any cause. (I mean, we're all going to die, but you can put it off if you get decent sleep.)

Following five key sleeping habits can add years to your life, according to research.

Researchers at Beth Israel Deaconess in Boston report that the benefits of good rest reduce the risk of death from any cause by up to 30 percent.

Overall, life expectancy was 4.7 years greater for men and 2.4 years greater for women who reported having all five quality sleep measures, compared with those who had none or only one of the five favorable elements of low-risk sleep.

Previous studies have shown that getting too little or too much sleep can negatively affect the heart. It has also been widely reported that sleep apnea, a disorder that causes people to pause or stop breathing while asleep, can lead to several heart conditions, including high blood pressure, atrial fibrillation and heart attacks.

The study reveals that those who had all five were 30 percent less likely to die from any cause. They’re also 21 percent less likely to die from cardiovascular disease, 19 percent less likely to die from cancer, and 40 percent less likely to die of causes other than heart disease or cancer.

Scientists reveal the five key habits as:

1. Sleep seven or eight hours of sleep a night

I mean, if you're scrolling TikTok, it's really hard to get to sleep. And you know, there a lot to watch on HBO Max. But this is important. Leave your screen in the other room. It helps.

This might involve meditation. Or someone knocking you out. I like the Calm sleep app. Effective and not violent.
