Is it just me, or does this seem to happen in Massachusetts more often than you would think? An extremely rare crustacean was discovered off the coast of Marblehead last Thursdsay. According to CBS News Boston, this was a 1 in 2 million find. And the blue lobster was caught by a couple in Massachusetts.
The article from the Boston news station stated that husband and wife Anne and David Rodgers made the fantastic find. The couple is a lobster boat crew and they were preparing for Hurricane Lee. Suddenly. Anne spotted the nearly neon blue ocean creature. The couple shared their story and photos with the Marblehead Current.
As the couple shared with the Marblehead Current, Anne said the lobster's color was"really blue — like blue-rubber-gloves blue. It was beautiful." The unusual color is apparently caused by a genetic mutation. Experts say the mutation causes the lobster's body to over produce a protein. In 2020 the New England Aquarium, after another blue lobster find, said only about 1 in 2 million lobsters of this color are found in the wild.
So what became of our old friend "Blue?" As Anne and Dave told the Marblehead Current, although they thought about what it would look like mounted on their wall. They made other plans. The Rodgers did contemplate selling it the the Aquarium. But ultimately, Anne said, "We decided, with the storm coming up, it’s bad luck to keep the blue lobster. In the end, we decided to throw the lobster back in the water." Certainly a happy ending...at least for "Blue."
