Forever Chemicals in MA Water: Which Cities Have the Most?
When it comes to forever chemicals in MA water, some cities are better off than others. So how does your city stack up?
I live in Woburn, where PFAS (Perfluoroalkyl and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances), or “forever chemicals” have made their way into the city’s water supply. I received a letter last year stating that levels were right on the cusp of dangerous, especially for children and the elderly. The city suggested bottled water, which is not a solution as it creates plastic waste. So I bought a Berkey Water filter system.
Turns out my city isn’t the only one grappling with this issue. WaterFilterGuru recently shared a study titled Metro Areas Weigh In on “Forever Chemicals” and it has some useful information. For starters, we’re lucky to be in Massachusetts, as our state ranks No. 2 in the nation when it comes to PFAS testing. Currently, the Commonwealth tests for “forever chemicals” in 195 cities and towns.
Forever Chemicals in MA Water: Which Cities Have the Most?
Hyannis, MA currently holds the dubious distinction of having some of the highest PFAS levels among the cities tested. With 855 ppt (parts per trillion), they’re at the highest level in the state. And they’re the third-highest in the nationwide study, behind San Luis Obispo, CA and Issaquah, WA. On the other end of the spectrum, Agawam and Wayland, MA have some of the lowest levels among tested cities.
The study also states that nearly 1 in 4 Americans are unaware of PFAS in their water, so this might be a good opportunity for you to learn more. These synthetic chemicals that have made their way into our soil, air, and water aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. Read the full study to find out what you can do on the small scale to avoid your exposure to PFAS and on the large scale to keep them out of the environment.
