Boston Musicians Find New Rehearsal Space in a Familiar Place

A familiar view to the thousands of you who’ve won tickets from us over the years.

Boston musicians are getting a much-needed win after a steady run of losses in recent weeks and months. And there's a ROCK 92.9 connection.

If you need to do some catching-up with this story, here's a bit of background. The Sound Museum in Allston provided practice space for local musicians and artists for over 40 years. The building, located at 155 North Beacon Street, was purchased by developers last year. And while the bands who called the space home advocated for an exit plan, no concrete plan was put in place. This led to a few community movers and shakers stepping up and stepping in.

The Art Stays Here Coalition, -- "artists, musicians, and advocates who, through coming together in one voice, work both to prevent arts and cultural displacement throughout Greater Boston" -- moved quickly to secure a temporary space in Dorchester for displaced musicians. The move into the new facility was underwritten by the New England Musicians Resource Fund, who have been providing direct financial assistance to local musicians since the start of the COVID pandemic in 2020.

The temporary space is being operated by local nonprofit The Record Co. And the location of that temporary space? 55 Morrissey Boulevard in Dorchester, former home of the ROCK 92.9 studios.

I've been following the twists and turns of this story for months, so I can't tell you how excited I was to see that the old ROCK 92.9 studios are now being used by local bands to rehearse and create. The Boston Herald covered the story over the weekend. You can read their piece here and see some pictures of how the space has been remodeled to accommodate local artists.

Oh, and you'll probably need a bit of context. Here's a gallery I put together of 55 Morrissey back in August of 2022 before we moved out of the space and into our new studios in Waltham. I hope the bands and musicians now calling the building home are having as much fun there as I did.

A Top 10 List of Movies Filmed in Massachusetts

The Oscars have come and gone, but we still have the movies on our mind. Let's dig into this Top 10 list of movies filmed in Massachusetts.

The list comes courtesy of BetMassachusetts. They titled it Top 10 Massachusetts Movies: Best Movies Filmed in Massachusetts. Pretty straightforward, right? But you might ask: how did they come up with this particular Top 10? What's the methodology? It's quite simple. They used the IMDB ratings of the films, alongside the Rotten Tomatoes audience score, Rotten Tomatoes critics score, Box Office tally, and Oscar recognition. In other words, the data is sound.

We'll get into the Top 10 below, but I wanted to share some thoughts first. I like this list because the film you'd expect to sit atop the Top 10 actually lands in second place. It's always a treat when you get an unexpected outcome like that. What's more, the Top 10 consists primarily of films released in the last 20 years. That's refreshing. Usually, with a "Top 10 Movies" list you end up with a lot of older fare. Which is fine. But again, the treat of the unexpected outcome makes this list a standout for me.

One more note before we dive in: the movie that landed at number three is a must-see. It was released just a few years ago and, when it was, I had friends and family members harping on me to watch it. I put it off and put it off and, when I finally got around to it, I was blown away. It's not often you have a film with a protagonist who you're rooting for but who, at the same time, is so damn unlikable.

Take a look at the list and let us know your faves that were left off on the ROCK 92.9 Facebook and Twitter. Maybe we can make our own Top 10 list together!
