Kurt Cobain is the subject of a new opera in the works in London at the Royal Opera House.
Per The Guardian, the opera is an adaptation of the 2005 Gus Van Sant film Last Days, which was inspired by the actual last days of Cobain who tragically took his own life in April 1994 when he was 27.
The Guardian notes the opera is composed by Royal Opera House's composer-in-residence Oliver Leith who calls himself a "massive" Nirvana fan and the opera "...plunges into the torment that created a modern myth." Leith would go on to say, "I owe a lot of how I now make music to the sound of grunge from that time – I had never really thought about where my experimental mess and repetitions had come from."
The Last Days opera will be part of the Royal Opera House's 2022-2023 season, but an exact premiere date was not specified.
Nirvana’s landmark album Nevermind, which was released 29 years ago today (September 24), was as ground-breaking as it was successful.
