In a recent interview, Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett revealed that on April Fool's Day, 1983, Metallica's sound engineer Mark Whittaker called him with an invitation to join the band. Hammett was sitting on the toilet when he took the call. And given the ridiculousness of the situation--and the date--his first instinct was to dismiss the call as a prank.
Of course, it was not. Hammett would make is exodus from Exodus and replace Dave Mustaine as Metallica's lead guitarist. Get the rest of the story from NME, and make sure you're listening all week for your chance to win a copy of Metallica's S&M2.
