We here at ROCK 92.9 would like to wish Tre Cool of Green Day a tre cool birthday. We’re so sorry; we couldn’t resist.
Here’s a thing that will make you upset: Tre Cool turns 50 today. You like that? The drummer of arguably the biggest punk band of the ’90s–pop or otherwise–just hit the big five-oh. Tre, if you’re reading this, don’t take this the wrong way: I thought you were older. I guess that’s a compliment, though? Because you’ve been doing this since you were a damn teenager!
I had the pleasure of seeing Green Day for the first time at Fenway park in the summer of 2021. I took my 12-yr-old (at the time) and we had a time. It was their first-ever big rock show, and Green Day delivered. Tre was a big part of the reason why. I knew he was a solid punk rock drummer, but he’s more than that. He’s an all-time great behind the kit. I’d call him “The Human Dynamo,” but that would be disrespectful to the memory of Mel Taylor of The Ventures.
Tre and Green Day, of course, have a much deeper history with the city of Boston. The infamous Hatch Shell show in ’94 is still talked about almost 30 years later. I’d love to have the bragging rights of saying I was there, but I was not. Plenty of people in my circle were, though, and I know it’s an all-time (in)famous moment as far as the band is concerned, too.
A Tre Cool Birthday Six-Pack
So let’s all wish Tre Cool a Happy 50th Birthday. As I’ve been doing on big-name rock star birthdays, I’m sharing a sixer of my favorite songs. Take a look below, then head on over to my page and see who else I’ve served up birthday six-packs for recently.
