The New Bedford Whaling Museum is ready to host the 30th annual "Moby-Dick" Marathon this weekend. It includes a 25-hour live reading from Herman Melville's classic novel. Honoring this tradition since 1997, it remembers Melville's 1841 journey from New Bedford on the whaleship Acushnet.
The celebration starts Friday, Jan. 2, with dinner and a lecture for Melville enthusiasts. Joe Roman is the main speaker for this event. The reading officially kicks off at noon on Saturday, Jan. 3. Massachusetts Poet Laureate Regie Gibson will say Melville's famous line, "Call me Ishmael," at the Lagoda's stern.
In times when isolation pushes many to their own echo-chambers — cultural, religious, political, and more — shared moments for unity are important," stated Regie Gibson to South Coast Today. He also mentioned that joining these readings shows engagement and community spirit.
Participants from various backgrounds will join. Guests include members from the Melville Society, students, educators, creatives, and local political figures. Ending the reading Sunday afternoon, museum president Amanda McMullen will conclude with the final passage.
Many activities are planned for the weekend. The Drawing Room will host events connecting literature and art, such as a wine tasting and artist chat. On Saturday, visitors can join sessions like “Stump the Scholars” and “Chat with Melville Scholars.” Except for the dinner, most events are free, though registering in advance is recommended.
Throughout the event, visitors can attend a sermon at the Seamen’s Bethel, a short Portuguese reading marathon, and storytelling for children. Attendees will enjoy free chowder and coffee. The marathon continues through the night, providing a cozy spot for dedicated fans.
The museum houses extensive collections, including every "Moby-Dick" edition ever published, enhancing the experience. This yearly reading brings together novel enthusiasts, fostering connection as they dive into all 136 chapters.
